Internet Guru’s – Use Credit Cards??

Use your credit card to fund your business???

This post is about a less than positive aspect of internet marketing. I have come across some really good marketers and some that I feel I could trust implicitly. On the other hand it serves us well to remember that not everyone out there is as true as they should be. We concern ourselves greatly with what is going on in the internet when it comes to our children. We buy software to restrict access at certain times and to certain sites and if you are like me, although we do not like to be sneaky, we still check what they have been up to.

The thing is, because we are “adults” we always think we know best. The problem is although we may and I emphasise may be more worldly, those who would take advantage of us are even more prepared.

As I mentioned before, I have been signing up for various programs on internet marketing. What I was not prepared for was the phone call. Yes the phonecall. You are again asking “what now”.

Well I was asking the same thing when the phone went. I answered, as you do, to find that it was a call from a person claming to represent a very well known, market leading, internet “Guru”. After some small talk the chap explained that they were looking to take on some 10 to 15 new internet marketing apprentices. They would be trained by them intensely for a period of about 6 months. I was chuffed to think they had selected me. It did my self esteem no end of good.

They said it would not cost me anything but then proceeded to ask about my financial situation. The reasoning for this they said, was that they wanted to use my story to prove there success at what they do. Given the new FTC rules regarding marketing this made some sense. They became very interested in my credit card debt and my credit rating with the banks. The crux of this is that they want you to be in debt for the story but that you need to be a good risk for them to promote. How can you be a good businessman if your credit rating is poor, was the insinuation.

They know that you are trying to make money and won’t charge you but they want you to use your credit card to build your business. They say that if anything goes wrong then you have the backing of the credit card company.  I know that credit card companies provide some secutiy as regards internet fraud and making sure that you get money back as refunds etc, but I could not see why it was relevant to a business venture. I do not know the particular credit card rates in the US, Canada or anywhere else but I do know that here in the UK the rates run on average between 15% and 30%.

Now ask any businessman or bank manager and they will tell you that this would be financial suicide. As an ex Fnancial Advisor this would be the last thing I would recommend to any client. You would have to be very desparate to put yourself in that position. Having said that, I do realise that sometimes you have to put yourself in a precarious situation to make the most of an opportunity. That might be the case if you were guaranteed a return very quickly and I mean a real guarantee.

The thing is, I have had more than one call from similarly high profile Internet Guru’s. This is not the type of e maketing I had in mind when I started my business but it seems that some do not care about the customer as much as they say. My advice would be to think very carefully before committing to any such funding plan regardless of how persuasive these guys are. Remember they don’t pick up your bills.
